From 1990 to 1995, Dr. Rick Strassman conducted U.S. government-approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected 60 volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical found in the psychedelic Amazon brew ayahuasca, is also manufactured by the human brain. In Strassman's volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, aliens, angels, and spirits. Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives. Strassman's research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by René Descartes to be the seat of the soul.
DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul's movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that so-called alien abduction experiences are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.

Dr. Strassman writes about his research into DMT. I appreciated he didn't hold back on the positive and negative experiences and describing what the participants actually experienced. I have never taken a psychedelic drug for shamanic journeying, but they are used in some cultures and traditions to access the other realms so I am curious and by reading this book was able to experience things vicariously. It was the experiences that were the most interesting part of the book for me.One area of concern was the physical effects, in particular the blood pressure on some participants rose to dangerous heights. The participants were screened more judiciously after the incidents with the worrisome blood pressure and DMT dose finding. I found this troubling. Why would a doctor allow those with blood pressure/health issues in the study in the first place? As the participants also had certain expectations and the experience was in a controlled setting we also have to judge the experiments in this context. How they would have done with non-drug induced shamanic type journeys, meditation, or any number of other tools is not compared or examined. This is purely an excursion into the DMT realm and not an examination into various treatment modes. So what was the result? It varied. In the 2 year follow up some felt they didn't really receive any benefit, some felt they got some benefit such as a feeling of more peace and others, especially those that faced and conquered this fear of death, seemed to benefit more, perhaps finding a new spirituality and facing the world with less fear and more enthusiasm. No one apparently capitalized on their DMT psychological or spiritual experiences, but the study was not designed for that purpose. Strassman feels without "a suitable framework" to process or guide their experiences it was jut another psychedelic experience. Strassman had hoped from some kind of breakthrough on the high does where many participants had vivid and amazing encounters with other worlds and other beings, but these experiences did not appear to affect any real change given the path the partcipants were already on and their personalities.Strassman is frustrated by the results and decides to move on to more research with longer acting psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms. Again the research seems to only bring questionable benefits given the risks. He notes there is a similarity in the experiences on the psychedelics. Strassman runs into a number of personal and spiritual difficulties. He gives up his research. In the last part of the book Dr. Strassman speculates on whether the beings and realms are real or creations from within ourselves and on future research. It appears that while some benefited from their DMT ecstasy experiences none had any deep spiritual breakthroughs or perhaps what they experienced just didn't meet what Dr. Strassman expected or defined as a benefit. Dr. Strassman apparently wanted DMT to spontaneously bring on enlightenment. He joins others who think controlled psychadelic drug use can bring about enlightenment. He picked participants who meditated, some with previous psychadelic use, believing they would be able to better handle the psychadelic experience. Did the Jesus or Buddha need DMT or psychadelics to experience the sublime? Enlightenment cannot be forced. Personally this confirms what I have felt about drug use when journeying. Without a spiritual, cultural, traditional context to channel or guide the experience any insights or visions will be of limited benefit.
I purchase this in 2010 for insight into others experience with the molecule. I had inclinations of what it was and what it had opened to me. It was difficult to get into as it had a lot of "filler", for a lack of better words, to build some sort of drama that I believed would have served better laced in between other chapters. The meat of the book is in the middle and the thesis of the book is to portray this experience as objective realities; sets the progressive synopsis of the trips as such. That part is fascinating and if i was rating the book based on its subject matter it would be a 5. If i based the book on it's thesis it would be a 2. The reader is kept from many factors that would be contrary to the thesis unless they have tried it themselves. Seems the Doctor was given permission to conduct these studies but wasn't able to give us the data of the physiological changes and brain activity necessary to give us the full picture. I was surprise by the length of the study how little information we have in comparison.Overall there was a disconnect between the reason given for the cessation of the study and the reason the study was even granted.
This is an incredible book. Strassman's story was so interesting that I couldn't put this book down. It provides an incredible account of the research he did, along with his personal journey through it and all of the hardships he faced. His research was so monumental because it had never been done before in the way he did it, and it will likely never have the chance to be repeated. I gained a lot of insight into the infiniteness of possibility that DMT presents to each user, depending on their personal context. Strassman's scientific and spiritual reasoning throughout this book absolutely blew my mind. This is a must-read for anyone who advocates for psychedelics as valuable spiritual/psychological tools.
I've enjoyed reading both the paper back and the kindle version of this book quite a lot. R. Strassman's writing style brings some humorous elements to the banal theater of medical experimentation. Medicine, Religion, and Psychedelics make for some odd bedfellows at the close of the 20th century.Dr. Strassman had me laughing with (or maybe "at") him during much of the book as you can feel first his surprise and then his exhaustion at the turn of events during his case studies. One can envision him reaching for a bottle of liquor as he has to listen to another "being encounter" and then talk to his subjects as if they were real. The case studies are [of course] awe inspiring and makes one ponder "what really is happening"? Why has DMT been placed on this planet in so many plants and species? What purpose does DMT serve if it does naturally occur in our brain/bodies (as well as countless plants)? The author's attempts to connect parallel universe, interplanetary travel, and dark matter to DMT at first seem so far fetched (and perhaps dated now), it almost made me stop reading; however, after absorbing it a while, and knowing humans have used these drugs to channel the "spirit plane" for thousands of years, perhaps it's not so far fetched after all.The biggest upset was Dr. Strassman "giving up" on his psychedelic research after being delivered some blows he may have predicted after seeing the early psychedelic "pioneers" suffer similar fates in their respective communities.Highly recommended reading...
