Being from a former Yugoslavia myself and living in America for the last 17 years, I feel free to say that I was very excited to finally find a book about Croatia that's not gloomy and war related. As much as this was a tragic and awful time for people in Balkans, it's about the time that someone wrote something that's actually funny, although somewhat stereotypical at times, and culturally insightful about Croatia. I don't think that any of us Croats, Bosnians, Serbs, etc. would have been able to explain this to any American through the American perspective any better than this book. It's funny, mostly correct in its cultural facts, insightful, heartwarming, and easy to read. I won't comment on editing as this is not a literary piece and won't make you smarter in any way, however it will provide an insight into a colorful and oftentimes silly customs of Balkan culture and its people. If you are planning to travel, have friends or significant others from Croatia, then this book should be in your library.
As a non-Croatian, Cody captured the essence of the Croatian soul to its very depth. This is an amazing feat. As a Croatian American, I laughed out loud so many times reading this book. When I think of my own father scolding me my whole life whenever I was barefoot (opet si bosa, he would say), or my mother fearing I would die an instant death because I had wet hair and their was propuh. And God forbid I should sit on something cold! This book was so entertaining and so true to Croatian idiosyncrasies, that unless you are Croatian, you can't begin to explain it to a non-Croatian. And Cody NAILED it!!
In the spirit of reviewing this book, I'm drinking some coffee and propping up my bare feet onto my desk. Ahhh.I just finished reading it. As someone who will be visiting in a few months (I loved the poetic description of Zagreb and Split in the winter) I also laughed out loud- I live in Colorado, and naturally we consider fresh air to be healthy, and stale indoor air to be the opposite! I also teach yoga.. and am a big proponent of going barefoot for biomechanical/fitness reasons, (over-engineered shoes are the devil!) so I can relate. But I also get the feeling that I will love Croatia. Jedva Äekam!Cody's writings have made for some interesting conversations with my friends in Croatia about the difference in culture, but also as a way to discover some similarities between us. I have friends and contacts that have some very American qualities, and I know I will pick up (If I have not already) some Croatian traits. This book and Zablogreb have so far served as a great introduction to me (and have been a LOT easier to read than my BCS grammar text!) My only complaint: I can't find the book here in the US in Croatian, because I want to read it on the plane. It might take me at least the 10 hour flight to get through it, but a perfect way to practice.. So I'll just have to find it in Zagreb and test my reading comprehension skills on the flight back to the US! Come to think of it, I need to save room in my baggage to bring everyone a small gift.I hope there is more coming!
Having lived in Croatia for a while, and thinking about returning to live there permanently I found this book humorous and also quite true, in spite of the exaggerations that make up the humor. Having said that, being a native of Vienna, Austria the author's amazement over anything from "propuh" to "papuÄe" seems quite normal to me, but I could see where it would be a hurdle for Americans. But no matter how biting the sarcasm, underlying is the apparent love for his new country. And I agree, Croatia is a thoroughly loveable country and its people are amazing!
This book was recommended to me by one of the guides on a recent tour to Croatia. It was a fun story, but I most appreciated the author's insights into being an American living abroad and preferring it. As child I lived in South America, spent one year in the U.S. in 6th grade, and then moved to Europe for my junior high and high school years. I have never felt that I fit it with American culture and my immigrant friends think I'm crazy to want to leave the U.S., I guess because they made the choice to live here. I frequently travel abroad because I know this is not the greatest country in the world and enjoy getting away from here. My mom, also an immigrant, tells me to think of myself as cosmopolitan and be done with it. Anyway, I enjoyed the last chapters of the book because of those observations by an American of America.
Great read for someone considering Croatia as a retirement option. The book gave me real taste for the Croatian people. Some of them reminded me of my grandfather and my aunt. You can take the people out of Croatia but you can't ake the Croatian out of the people.
I am Croatian American and have been to Croatia 14 times. I even lived and went to school there for 6 months. When I read this book I finally understood how my poor American husband felt. I took so much of the cultural differences for granted being raised by two Croatian immigrants. Great read for anyone wanting to know about Croatian culture! Funny and entertaining. I couldn't put it down. Looming forward to the sequel!!
I was in Croatia when I read this. It is short and consists of a series of short essays. Brown married a Croatian woman and moved to Croatia. The book consists of his experiences learning about the differences between life in Oklahoma and Croatia. He is a good writer and it is an entertaining read.
